CAN the Bird 5K

The Mount Vernon Lee Chamber of Commerce is excited to host CAN the Bird 5K, a Kingstowne Turkey Trot, Thanksgiving morning at 8am! This local community run will double as a CANned food drive for those less fortunate in our community. We hope you enjoy the event and come back each year!

PACKET PICKUP: Packet Pickup is available race day morning only, beginning at 7am, in the Kingstowne Walmart parking lot. Please find the REGISTRATION table near the start to obtain your bib and race shirt. If you have any last minute trotters, race-day registration is available at a rate of $40 per adult, $35 per military member, $30 for ages 13-25, and $10 for ages 12 and under. Race shirts will be available for the first 215 runners signed up.

PARKING: Ample parking is available in the Kingstowne Walmart parking lot, located at  5885 Kingstowne Blvd, Alexandria, VA 22315. Please note: the FRONT entrance WILL BE CLOSED for the START, and the RIGHT SIDE parking will be CLOSED for the POST-RACE celebration; PLEASE USE THE SIDE ENTRANCE ACCESSED THROUGH SIR VICEROY DRIVE. At the conclusion of the event, the front entrance will reopen.

 

FOOD DRIVE: Please bring all NON-PERISHABLE food donations to the REGISTRATION table. There will be collection table off to the side. Although we recommend at least one food donation item per attendee, donations are optional and will not affect your eligibility to race and place.

RESTROOMS: There will be portable restrooms in ROW 2 of the Kingstowne Walmart parking lot. Walmart will not be open.

RACECOURSE: This year’s 5K course has a little something for everyone. Enjoy some window shopping as the start of the race cuts through the middle of the Kingstowne Towne Center. Runners will then turn RIGHT onto Kingstowne Village Parkway, then a LEFT onto a trail to enjoy the scenery surrounding Kingtowne Lake. After viewing the Lake, runners will exit the trail onto Van Dorn Street and bask in the downhill run all the way to Telegraph Road. At Telegraph Road, runners will take a hairpin turn to the RIGHT onto a trail behind the subdivision. The trail ends at Kings Centre Drive, at which point, runners will turn LEFT and head uphill to then turn LEFT again onto Barclay Drive. Runners will then follow Barclay Drive all the way around until it meets back up with Kings Centre Drive and take a RIGHT. This final jaunt is a flat and fast stretch to the FINISH, at the backside of the Kingstowne Walmart! Please see the attachment for the course map, and where possible, please use sidewalks. Throughout the course there will be race route signs along with mile markers. There will also be police officers blocking themajor intersections from traffic.

WATER STATIONS: There will be two water stations. The first one will be at the corner of Van Dorn Street and Kings Centre Drive, approximately at mile 1.25. The other water station will be where the trail meets with Devereux Circle Drive at approximately mile 2.25. Please see attachment for the map of the course. The Water Stations are annotated by the water drops.

POST RACE and AWARDS: The post-race celebration will take place on the right side of Walmart near the finish line. Local sponsors will have tables set up, refreshments will be available, and prizes will be on display. It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without pie! Please note that awards will commence at 8:45am.
